Carthel Austin Long, age 81, of Coweta, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on June 17, 1944, in Coweta, Oklahoma, to Daniel Long, Jr. and Opal Juanita (Walker) Long.

Carthel grew up in Coweta and graduated from Coweta High School in 1962. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, entering service in 1963. He served honorably as a Hospital Corpsman (HM3) and was stationed at U.S. Naval Supply Depot in Seattle, Washington, and later at U.S. Naval Station Kodiak, Alaska. During his time in Alaska, he also provided medical support in the field. Carthel was honorably released from active duty on March 7, 1967, and continued serving his country in the United States Naval Reserve for 20 years.

After his military service, Carthel attended barber school, later working in retail for a number of years. He eventually attended Bacone College, where he earned an Associate degree in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse at the age of 43. Carthel spent approximately 24 years in nursing, serving and caring for others until his retirement around age 67.

Carthel was also known in the community for owning the Joy Theatre in Coweta, which he operated for several years. He was a hardworking man who enjoyed staying busy, working in the yard, and tinkering with various projects. Carthel loved fishing and was known as a collector who enjoyed fixing and working on things. He was a strong-willed man with a tremendous work ethic, values he proudly instilled in his children.

Carthel was united in marriage to Carol Sue Long on November 5, 1965, in Wagoner, Oklahoma, and together they built a life centered around family.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Long of the home in Coweta, Oklahoma; his son, Jason Long and wife Tammy of Coweta, Oklahoma; his daughter, Moriah Graves and husband Coy of Coweta, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Nicklaus Long, Lauren Grace Long, Titus Graves, Luke Long, Elise Graves, and Kinsley Graves; his brother, Leslie Long and wife Carla of Coweta, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Long, Jr. and Opal Juanita Long, and his brother, Dwight Long.

Viewing will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Brown’s Funeral Service in Coweta, Oklahoma. A funeral service honoring Carthel’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Coweta, Oklahoma, with Dr. Vern Charette officiating. Interment will follow at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, Oklahoma, where military honors will be rendered by the United States Navy.
