On June 9, 1944, Columbus and Edna Barnes welcomed their fourth son to their family and named him Columbus, Jr. He was the fourth of thirteen children and went by “Sandy” but was affectionally called “Redman” and “Sandman” by family members. He grew up and attended Coweta Public Schools until he enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. He was a proud veteran and represented his branch well. Anyone that knew him, knew of his passion for God, family, and mechanics. He had businesses in California and Tulsa, where he was known to be the best and most sought-after mechanic. Sandy made the tough decision to close his shops and began a career at American Airlines where he became a part of their family for a decade, before retiring to focus on his health, family and church. Through the years into retirement, he still loved working on cars until his health prevented him from doing it anymore. He served his church at Jackson Grove Baptist Church as a deacon under the mentorship of Pastor Irvin Sloan, Rev. Wilber Cummings and Rev. Johnny L. Jones and later became a pastor at Mt. Rose Baptist Church, in Coweta. He then purchased and served as pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, in Tulsa, OK.
Sandy is preceded in death by one daughter, Rose “Sugarlook” Marie Lyles; parents, Columbus and Edna Barnes; three brothers, Vohn Curtis Barnes, Carl Edward Barnes, and Ricky Joe Barnes; two sisters, Kimberly Patricia Barnes Worley, and Donna Kay Barnes Atkins. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Rhonda Barnes, Steven Barnes (Taneia), Dwaine Barnes (Charisse), Kevin Barnes, Craig Barnes, Mildred Barnes, Carl Barnes (Markina), Edria Barnes Mason, Amber Barnes, and Terrance Barnes-Woods (Kendra); three brothers Winston Barnes, Vernon Barnes, Curtis Barnes; four sisters, Gloria Barnes, Geneva Barnes-Goree, Lela Fulsom (Roy), and Willie Peoples (Lee); along with a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
