Doris Mildred Newman, age 90, lifelong resident of Coweta, OK, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, January 12, 2026, at Prairie House Assisted Living in Broken Arrow, OK. She was born on May 13, 1935, in Coweta, OK, to Ralph Oliver Gilbert and Beatrice Irene (Wilson) Gilbert.
Doris was raised in Coweta, where she developed strong roots, lifelong friendships, and a deep love for her hometown. Doris attended Coweta schools and proudly graduated from Coweta High School in 1953.
On February 20, 1954, Doris married the love of her life, Herman Lee Newman, in Coweta. Their marriage spanned more than 70 years and stood as a beautiful example of devotion, faith, and partnership. Together, they built a home filled with love, laughter, and family traditions that will continue for generations.
Doris devoted her life first and foremost to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose heart revolved around caring for others. While her children were young, Doris chose to stay home, pouring her time and energy into raising her family. Later, she worked as a sales clerk at Ben Franklin and City Drug in Coweta, where she was well known and warmly remembered by customers and coworkers alike.
Doris was a woman of faith throughout her life. She attended First Christian Church of Coweta and cherished her church family.
Family was Doris’s greatest joy and purpose. She treasured time spent with her children and grandchildren and especially delighted in caring for the little ones. She loved attending Southern Gospel music shows, traveling with her family, reading on her Kindle, and enjoyed dining at The Country Cottage Restaurant. One of her most cherished traditions was making French toast for her grandchildren, as well as baking special candies during the holidays. Doris had a special love for children and took great pride in her growing family.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Herman Newman, of the home in Coweta, OK; her children, Rodney Newman and wife Ann of Oklahoma City, OK, and Towana Morton and husband Stanley of Coweta, OK; her grandchildren, Kayla Hamilton and husband Chris of Burleson, TX, Carus Newman and wife Maggie Rose of Kansas City, MO, and Rachel Newman of Oklahoma City, OK; her great-grandchildren, Austin Murray and Cooper Hamilton, with a great-granddaughter soon to arrive; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Oliver and Beatrice Irene Gilbert, and her sisters, Vera Morrow and Loretta Keel.
Doris will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering love for her family, and the countless ways she made others feel cared for. Her legacy of faith, kindness, and family devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Brown’s Funeral Service in Coweta, OK. Funeral services honoring Doris’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at the First Christian Church in Coweta, OK, with Pastor Jeff King officiating. She will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK.
