Jay Potter, Jr. was born on November 22, 1941, in the Choska Bottoms near Coweta, Oklahoma, to Jay Potter, Sr. and Lurline (Hester) Potter. Jay passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the age of 84.
Jay was raised in Coweta and graduated from Coweta High School in 1960. He was a proud Coweta Tiger, playing basketball, serving as captain of the football team and serving as class president.
Jay spent much of his career in the telecommunications industry as a telephone installer, working for companies such as Western Electric, Southwestern Bell and Lucent Technologies. After many years of dedicated service, he retired from the industry. He was also an entrepreneur and businessman, owning Jay’s Auto Sales in both Tulsa and Coweta, as well as other repair shops. A man of many talents, Jay was proud to have built two of his own homes during his lifetime.
Jay had a lifelong love of fast cars, especially the 1955 Chevy, owning several over the years. A skilled drag racer, he raced his beloved ‘Alive 55’ and won the AHRA Super Street Championship in 1980, an achievement of which he was very proud.
Jay enjoyed working on cars, watching ball games, spending time at the horse races, playing games of chance, watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events and visiting with family and friends. Jay was a huge sports fan with a special love for the Sooners. These were the things that made life meaningful to him.
Jay was married to Donna Taylor, and together they had two children, Shelly and Jason. He later married Patti (Dodson) Hodges, and they were blessed with a daughter, Shay.
Jay married Phyllis Ann (Wear) Replogle-Potter, and they shared more than 13 years of marriage and made their home together in Coweta, OK.
Jay is survived by his dedicated wife, Phyllis Replogle-Potter of the home in Coweta, Oklahoma; his children, Shelly (Potter) Newman and husband Matthew of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jason Clark Potter of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Shay (Potter) Surowiak of Coweta, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Evan Parker Newman-Chock and wife Dr. Michaiah Newman-Chock, Genna Grace Newman, Jackie Rose Potter, Kate Elizabeth Potter, Alexis Faith Surowiak; and his great-grandson, Zion RiverBear Potter; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and many dear friends.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Jay Potter, Sr. and Lurline (Hester) Potter; his siblings, Oren Potter, Betty Denton, Margaret Woodward, Darlene Wilson, Raymond Potter, Kathy Peterson, and Terry Potter, and his beloved grandson, Christopher “Isaiah” Potter.
Jay will be remembered for many things: his popularity, his athleticism, his good looks, his quick wit, his dedication and commitment to his family, his love of cars, his many accomplishments, and most importantly, the life he shared with his family and friends. His memory will live on in the many stories, experiences, and memories shared by those who knew and loved him.
