Jerry Allen “Shoat” Buster, age 85, passed away on January 30, 2023 at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Shoat was born on June 18, 1937 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to Harce and Louise (McKinney) Buster. His childhood years were spent in Porter, Oklahoma where he graduated from high school in 1955. He worked for the Oklahoma Dept. of Transportation, and later retired from Safeway.
Shoat met and married Rebecca Marie (Webb), and they made their home in Porter for many years, raising their five children before moving to Stillwater in 2007.
During his younger years in Porter, Shoat developed a keen interest in quarter horses, entering races as a jockey, and eventually as an owner/trainer. One of his special memories was attending the Kentucky Derby in 1982. He preferred the peacefulness and freedom of the outdoors, and particularly enjoyed working outside and taking road trips with Marie to see the countryside. As a dad, he welcomed his children home, always offering a “cup of coffee,” and as a grandfather, he enjoyed visiting with the grandkids and making each one feel special. Neighbors who met Shoat, knew they had met a friend. Although he will be greatly missed, memories of Shoat will be lasting and cherished forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harce and Louise Buster.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Marie Buster, to whom he was married for 63 years, and their five children, Brent (Sharon) Buster of Porter, OK; Susan (Danny) Wheeler of Bristow, OK; Cheryl McCormick (Mike) of Mounds, OK; Karen Van Leeuwen (John) of Fort Worth, TX; and Sharon Bays of Stillwater, OK; eight grandchildren, Krystel Markwardt, Leisha Buster, Lauren McCormick, Lacey (Kevin) Hart, Lydia (Miles) Dixon, Ryan Van Leeuwen, Kate Van Leeuwen, and Luke Bays; four great-grandchildren, Aspen Chance, Blake Stamps, Adley Hart, and Graham Dixon; one brother, Leroy Buster and two sisters, Christine Stevens and June Mallory.
