Lawrence O. Walker, age 77, longtime resident of Coweta, passed away peacefully at his home in Coweta, OK, on Monday morning, May 12, 2025. He was born on January 11, 1948, in Tulsa, OK to Lawrence Granvell and Margaret Jane (Young) Walker. Lawrence's life was marked by his dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
Lawrence attended Coweta schools and proudly graduated from Coweta High School in 1966. Shortly thereafter, he answered the call of duty and served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1982. As a Hospital Corpsman, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, where he demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his fellow servicemen and women. His military career was a significant chapter in his life, and he carried the values of honor and service with him long after his discharge.
Lawrence embarked on a career at Byron-Jackson Pump, where he worked in pump assembly for 29 years. His dedication to his work was evident in the meticulous care he took with each project. After his time at Byron-Jackson Pump, he continued to serve his fellow veterans as a Paralyzed Veterans of America National Service Officer with the Veterans Administration for 10 years until his retirement. His work with veterans was not just a job; it was a continuation of his service to his country.
Lawrence was a devoted member of the Coweta American Legion Post 226 for 30 years. His involvement with the Legion was a testament to his enduring camaraderie with his fellow veterans. In his leisure time, Lawrence found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman, relishing the tranquility of the water and the thrill of the catch. His passion for coin collecting was another hobby that allowed him to connect with history and the wider world.
On June 15, 1979, Lawrence married the love of his life, Darla S. (Lowery) Walker, in Miami, OK. Their union was blessed with love, laughter, and shared dreams until her passing.
Lawrence is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Riley and her husband Derrick Goodnight of Coweta, OK, Tonia May and her husband Michael of McKinney, TX, and Rachael Shipley and her husband Clint of Derby, KS; four grandchildren, Colton Riley and wife Lauren, Connor May, Campbell May, and Chloe May; his sisters, Annette Childress and husband Craig of Coweta, OK, Sonia Buchman and husband Randy of Broken Arrow, OK, and Marla Slocum and husband Jeff of Tulsa, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Darla S. Walker, and his parents, Lawrence Granvell and Margaret Jane Walker.
Visitation for Lawrence will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta, OK. Services celebrating his life will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at Brown Funeral Home Chapel in Coweta, OK, with Pastor Matt Rowell officiating. Lawrence will be laid to rest with full military honors at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta, OK.
