Melvin Carl Long, Jr., age 81, passed away on Sunday morning, December 14, 2025, at the Coweta Care & Rehab Center in Coweta, OK. He was born on October 20, 1944, in Hominy, OK to Melvin Carl Long, Sr. and Wanda Marie (Board) Long.
Melvin's life was one of unwavering commitment. He proudly served his nation as a member of the United States Air Force, a period of his life that shaped much of his character and values. Following his military service, Melvin answered a higher calling, devoting most of his life to ministry with the Assembly of God. His deep-rooted faith and ability to inspire those around him left a lasting impact on countless lives.
In addition to his spiritual work, Melvin was a pillar of safety in his community. He held the esteemed position of Police Chief in the Fairland Police Department during the 1970s. His dedication to law enforcement continued as he served as a deputy with the Osage County Sheriff's Office and the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office in the 1980s and 1990s. Melvin's love for horses was evident in his role with the mounted patrol at the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, combining his passion for service with his love of riding.
Melvin's zest for life extended beyond his professional endeavors. In his younger years, he was an avid participant in rodeos, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for horses. This passion was paralleled by his enjoyment of riding motorcycles, a hobby that brought him great joy and freedom. This passion for horses and motorcycles was a gift he passed on to his sons.
Melvin is survived by his sons, Todd Long of Atlantic City, WY, and Bradley Long of Tulsa, OK; his daughter, Mica Long; his granddaughters, Bailey Wilson of Broken Arrow, OK, Cassidy Long of Owasso, OK, and Addison Long; his great-granddaughter, Liberty Wilson of Broken Arrow, OK; his nephew, Greg "Slim" Long of Tulsa, OK; and several cousins.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Carl Long, Sr. and Wanda Marie (Board) Long; his sister, Karen Marie; his nephew, Lloyd Earl Long; his grandparents, Miles and Desi Long; and multiple aunts and uncles.
While there are no services planned for Melvin, his legacy will continue to be honored through the memories and stories shared by family and friends.
