Michael Dean “Mike” Massey, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, adventure, laughter, unwavering faith, and complete devotion to his family.

Mike was born on May 8, 1967, in Freeman, South Dakota, to Doyle Dean "Don" Massey and Lois Jeanette (Ratzlaff) Massey. He graduated from Freeman High School with the Class of 1985 and later attended Vo-Tech in Watertown, South Dakota.

For more than 36 years, Mike proudly worked for American Airlines as a Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Inspector, where he formed lifelong friendships and earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.

Mike embraced life fully and found joy outdoors and on the water. He loved taking the boat out in the summer, kayaking, exploring on his side-by-side, and playing golf. He especially enjoyed co-ed scrambles with his wife, Sandy, and their friends, cherishing every chance to spend time with the people he loved.

His passion for the water extended below the surface as well. As a scuba teaching assistant, Mike enjoyed sharing his love of diving with others. He and Sandy also completed a sailing program together, and he dreamed of one day captaining a sailboat through the Caribbean. He faithfully followed the adventures of SV Delos, inspired by the freedom and beauty of life under sail.

Mike's faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He loved his family above everything else and treasured every moment spent with them. He enjoyed fishing, reloading ammunition, building firearms for his grandchildren, learning to play the guitar, feeding the deer, listening to music, and simply being outdoors. No matter what he was doing, Mike had a way of making every moment an adventure.

Above all, Mike was a devoted husband and father. His four daughters were his greatest pride and joy. He loved them deeply and treasured every moment with them.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Sandy Sue Massey, with whom he shared nearly 13 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life filled with love, friendship, laughter, and adventure. Sandy will forever cherish his warm smile, his incredible hugs, and the love they shared.

He is also survived by his children, Sydney Pipes, Makayla Massey, Mallory Madej, and Aauna Massey and fiancé Cruz Clark; his grandchildren, Oakley, Josiah, Maverik, Ace, and Bayker; his sisters, Rhonda Hertz and Renae Fleming and husband Scott; his sister-in-law, Carol Allen Koscheski; his father-in-law, Larry Sims and wife Sandy; his brothers-in-law, Barry Sims, Jerry Sims, and Gary Sims; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doyle Dean "Don" Massey and Lois Jeanette Massey; and his son-in-law, Logan Madej.

Mike will be remembered for his generous heart, adventurous spirit, infectious smile, steadfast faith, and the way he made everyone feel welcome. His absence leaves an immeasurable void, but his love and the countless memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Though his journey ended far too soon, Mike's legacy of love, kindness, laughter, and a life well lived will never be forgotten.
