Velma (Jones) Nixon, age 82, of Inola, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at Hillcrest Hospital South in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was born on January 6, 1944, in Dexter, New Mexico, to Clem Calvin Jones and Sylvia Lee (Seigal) Jones.
Velma grew up in Roswell, New Mexico, where she attended Roswell schools. She later attended vocational school and completed cosmetology training. Velma spent many years working as the manager of M & S Grocery Store in Inola, where she became a familiar and friendly face to the community before eventually retiring.
Velma was known for her love of family and for the joy she found in caring for others. She especially enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and feeding her family, and many fond memories were made around her table. In her quiet moments, Velma enjoyed reading and working word puzzles, hobbies that kept her mind active and brought her peace.
Velma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose kindness and warmth touched many lives. Her family meant everything to her, and she treasured the time spent with children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Velma is survived by her husband, Gary Nixon of Inola, Oklahoma; her children, James Dean Lowater of Kiefer, Oklahoma, Patricia Lynn Stunkard of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Terry Leon Lowater and his wife Louella of Kiefer, Oklahoma, Brian Justin Nixon of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Joel Thomas Nixon of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mary Margaret Nixon of Inola, Oklahoma, and Laura Elizabeth (Nixon) Mayo and her husband Jason of Neenah, Wisconsin. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clem Calvin and Syliva Lee Jones, her son, Rodney “Ronnie” Leroy Lowater, her daughter, Tammy Marie Jackson, and seven siblings.
A memorial service honoring Velma’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, March 9, 2026, at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel in Coweta, Oklahoma, with Pastor Mike Harris officiating.
