Obituary

Dwight Claxton Gary Dwight Claxton, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, peacefully stepped into his heavenly home on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 79 years. He was born on June 3, 1944 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Floyd and Delia (Sluder) Claxton. Dwight was a pillar of his community and a devoted family man, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and dedication.

Dwight is survived by his loving wife, Donna Marie Claxton, and their family, including his children: Suzanne Nichole Craven of Coweta, Oklahoma, and Jeffrey Hager Claxton and wife, Lisa, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, from his previous marriage to Frannie Claxton; and Donna's children: Will Williamson of Jenks, Oklahoma, Lori Williamson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Christina Williamson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Paul Williamson and wife, Leila, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was also a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren: Tyler and wife, Ashlynn, Seth, Cameron, Avery, Lexi, Ethan, Jace, Caeli, Peyton, Charli, Evan, Madilynn, and Luke. Dwight's love extended to his three sisters: Nita Chartier and husband, Jack, of Coweta, Oklahoma, Brenda Self of Bixby, Oklahoma, and Karen Stone and husband, Nick, of Coweta, Oklahoma, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Raised in Coweta, Oklahoma, Dwight had an idyllic childhood. He had a passion for sports from a young age and was one of the first to make football All State from Coweta High School, a feat that earned him a football scholarship to The University of Tulsa. After graduating from Coweta High School in 1962, he was a 2-year All-Conference linebacker and a 3-year starting linebacker at TU. He was part of the TU football team that played in two Bluebonnet Bowl games, winning one, and being the first team to play in the new Houston Astrodome. Dwight received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Tulsa.

Dwight's career was as diverse as it was successful. After graduating from college, he worked for BlueCross BlueShield from 1966 to 1972. He then transitioned into the homebuilding business with Douglas L. Mobley. Dwight and Doug also owned and operated Southeast Lumber Company from 1973 to 1986. Their entrepreneurial spirits led them into the banking business for several years, and from 1990 until Doug’s passing in January 2023 and Dwight’s passing, they were involved in land development. They were business partners for over 50 years.

Beyond his professional and athletic achievements, Dwight was known for his love of golf, animals, crossword puzzles, genealogy, and he was proud of his ability to kick the top of a door jamb. He obtained a private pilot license and was part owner of a small airplane which he enjoyed flying in his earlier years. He was a longtime member and leader at Coweta Church of God of Prophecy. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, who will remember him for his unwavering love, support and his great sense of humor.
