Rev. Angel S. Murillo

Rev. Angel S. Murillo, of Coweta, OK passed away peacefully in the arms of his Lord and Savior, at his residence in Coweta, OK, Thursday evening, March 30, 2023. Rev. Murillo was born on May 31, 1937, in Panama, Central America. He was the son of Victorio and Mercedes Murillo and came to know Jesus as His Lord and Savior when he was 13 years old.  At age 18, he met a beautiful Salvadorian Christian woman, Nila, as they were both training for the ministry in Guatemala, Central America. They were married on December 13, 1959, in Panama City, Panama. He then led and pastored several churches in Panama, including the First Baptist Church of Panama City for 11 years. He taught at the Panama Baptist Theological Seminary and served as the President of the Baptist General Convention.

In 1981, Rev. Murillo followed God’s calling to Oklahoma as a missionary to serve with the North American Mission Board and the Oklahoma Baptist General Convention. In this fashion, he became a pioneer, since he was the first Hispanic missionary to work as a Catalytic missionary in the state of Oklahoma.  In this position, he traveled long distances and along with Anglo speaking churches and their associations, he planted churches in Southwest Oklahoma, trained pastors, and lay workers, while his wife worked by his side training women and established Women Missionary Unions.

Rev. Murillo believed that the pastorate was a calling and not a profession, and he worked tirelessly towards making a difference for the Kingdom. He was an amazing teacher and he established the first training sessions throughout the state of Oklahoma where Hispanic lay people were trained through Golden Gate Seminary. Rev. Murillo and his wife also established a radio program in Southwest Oklahoma where he preached, trained, and sang along with his wife to reach the lost for Jesus Christ.  He was also a gifted preacher and traveled worldwide to preach in revivals. Thus, he was called by many “the Hispanic Billy Graham.”

Since his retirement in 2002, Rev. Murillo moved to Coweta, Oklahoma to be near family, and became a member of First Baptist Broken Arrow, where he assisted in mission trips to Mexico and Venezuela. Later he began attending and joining a vibrant Spanish speaking church, Iglesia Biblica Bautista, where he played the piano, taught classes in how to lead music and assisted when and where needed. Rev. Murillo enjoyed reading everything, though his favorite book to read, study, and meditate was the Bible. He loved writing, teaching, tinkering with his hands, fixing the unfixable, playing the piano, and he specially loved singing with his soul mate, “Nila”, and their four children.

Rev. Murillo is survived by two sons, Rev. Rafael Murillo & wife, Robin, of Texas and Mr. Rolando Murillo & wife, Juanita, of Tulsa, OK; one daughter, Dr. Lyda Wilbur & husband, Geoff, of Coweta, OK; one son-in-law, Lance Sumner, of Virginia; two brothers Ernesto Murillo and Isaac Murillo, of La Arena de Chitré; one sister, “Neri” Murillo, also from La Arena de Chitré; eight grandchildren, Joshua Sumner, Roshelle Sumner, Isaiah Murillo, Daniel Murillo, Andrew Murillo, Jesse Murillo, Nathan Murillo and Caleb Murillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He also considered his wife's siblings as his own: Jesús Cáceres, Daniel Cáceres, Linda Montoya and Sarah Kinglow. They, along with their wives/husbands, and Nila’s mother, Virgilia Cáceres, were very special to him. It is also important to note that Rev. Murillo also left many spiritual children around the world, especially in Panama and Okahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, his wife and eldest daughter, Loyda Sumner.

El Rev. Angel S. Murillo, de Coweta, OK, falleció pacíficamente en los brazos de su Señor y Salvador, en su residencia en Coweta, OK, el jueves 30 de marzo de 2023. El Rev. Murillo nació el 31 de mayo de 1937 en Panamá, América Central. Era hijo de Victorio y Mercedes Murillo y llegó a conocer a Jesús como su Señor y Salvador cuando tenía 13 años. A los 18 años, llegó a conocer a una hermosa mujer Cristiana Salvadoreña, Nila, mientras ambos se entrenaban para el ministerio en Guatemala, América Central. Al Rev. Murillo le sobreviven dos hijos, el Rev. Rafael Murillo y su esposa, Robin, de Texas y el Sr. Rolando Murillo y su esposa, Juanita, de Tulsa, OK; una hija, la Dra. Lyda Murillo Wilbur y su esposo, Geoff, de Coweta, OK; un yerno, Lance Sumner, de Virginia; dos hermanos Ernesto Murillo e Isaac Murillo, de La Arena de Chitré; una hermana, "Neri" Murillo, también de La Arena de Chitré; ocho nietos, Joshua Sumner, Roshelle Sumner, Isaiah Murillo, Daniel Murillo, Andrew Murillo, Jesse Murillo, Nathan Murillo y Caleb Murillo; y numerosos sobrinos. También consideraba a los hermanos de su esposa como propios: Jesús Cáceres, Daniel Cáceres, Linda Montoya y Sarah Kinglow. Ellos, junto con sus esposas/esposos y su madre, Virgilia Cáceres, fueron muy especiales para él. Es importante notar que el Rev. Murillo también dejó muchos hijos espirituales alrededor del mundo, especialmente en Panamá y Oklahoma. El Rev.  Murillo fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, tres hermanos, su esposa y su hija mayor, Loyda Murillo Sumner.
