Velda Jo Withers

Velda Jo Withers, age 85, lifelong Coweta resident went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at her home in Coweta, Oklahoma.  Velda was born on January 29, 1936 in Coweta, Oklahoma to Russell and Opal Mae (Dobbs) Snelson.  She was a 1954 graduate of Coweta High School.  She was the first woman basketball player to receive all-state honors from Coweta High School.  Velda married the love of her life, Harry W. Withers on March 18, 1955 in Coweta and they were blessed with two sons, Bruce Wayne and Dwight Wade.  She worked at Wagoner County Rural Water District No. 5 as the office manager for over 35 years until she retired.  Velda was a faithful member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church in Broken Arrow.  She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, gardening, collecting precious moments, and playing the piano at Coweta Manor Nursing Home.  Velda loved everyone and did not consider anyone a stranger.  The love of God and her family were the most important part of her life.  Her church family was also especially important to her, and she made many close friends there over the years.  She was an incredibly special lady, with a beautiful smile.

Velda is survived by three grandsons, Joshua Withers of Coweta, Oklahoma, Jeff Withers and wife Angelina of Coweta, Oklahoma, and Jeremy Withers of Coweta, Oklahoma; three great grandchildren, Emma, Jacob, and Khloe Withers; two sisters, Donna Cole and husband Max of Coweta, Oklahoma and Glenda Denton and husband Larry of Coweta, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Velda was preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. Withers; her parents, Russell Snelson and Opal Mae Kirkland; and two sons, Bruce Wayne Withers and Dwight Wade Withers.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home in Coweta with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Services celebrating Velda’s life will be at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma with Pastor Joey Griffith officiating.  Velda will be laid to rest at Vernon Cemetery in Coweta.

Pallbearers are Kraig Withers, Kirk Withers, Ronnie Cole, Brandon Cole, Greg Edwards, Colton Edwards, Heston Edwards, and Jaxton Edwards. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Cypert, Jim Belden, Bill Clarkson, Steve Hoffman, and Floyd Griffith.
